Globe Telecom has just announced their full intention in getting into the esports scene and has partnered with some of the biggest gaming names in the South East Asia Region – Riot Games, Garena, and Mineski!
What are the odds that one of the biggest and well-known companies in the country will put a huge amount of importance into the gaming and the esports scene? It is definitely a sign of the changing times and proof that the industry we’ve been so passionate about is worth a second look.
Globe Gaming aims to give their customers, enthusiasts, and all gamers, access to the latest titles, local, regional and global esports competitions, original content and exclusive programming.
Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu stated that Globe will support the gaming and esports industry by providing fully optimized internet connectivity, world class events and tournaments in the Philippines. “Together with our new partners, we want to accelerate the gaming industry in the country by bringing gaming and esports into homes, mobile devices, malls and competition venues,” Cu said.
Prominent names and executives from top companies in the esports SEA scene dropped in to celebrate the announcement, including the ‘founding father of Philippine esports’ Ronald “Rhom” Robins, who is at the helm of Mineski and MET (Mineski Events Team).
“What excites us is Globe Telecom’s genuine commitment to build the future of gaming and esports in the Philippines. Their mission is authentic which is why we are embarking on this partnership,” Robins said.
The news is that Globe and Mineski will be joining forces to co-produce the Globe Philippine Pro Gaming League, a multi-title competition offering teams the opportunity to be crowned ‘Best in the Philippines’ while earning advancement to elite tournaments. Additionally, Globe and Mineski will bring back to the region the MET owned Manila Masters in 2019.
Globe is also partnering with Riot Games through Garena to bring content and tournaments from both League of Legends (LoL) and Arena of Valor (AoV) closer to all fans and players!
“Sharing a mindset is critical to any partnership, and Globe shares our vision in building for the long term growth of esports across the region”, commented Johnson Yeh, Managing Director of Riot Games for Greater China and Southeast Asia.
Globe, Garena, and Riot will introduce a groundbreaking multi-country tournament structure which awards the winning team direct entry into the League of Legends World Championships. The tournament, known as the SEA Tour, will lead to the first ever regional championship to be held in Manila in August 2018, known as the Globe Conquerors Manila, which will be the region’s leading sanctioned, competitive League of Legends event.
“We are extremely excited to be collaborating with Globe on League of Legends and Arena of Valor” said Jin Oh, CEO of Garena. “Garena has always strived to bring esports to the next level and we could not be happier to find a like-minded partner in Globe who shares this vision, and is similarly willing to invest time and resources into growing esports in the Philippines.”
Globe, together with Garena, has plans to introduce a series of ‘Valor Cup’ esports tournaments offering teams the chance to compete for entry into the Arena of Valor World Championships, held in Los Angeles in July where $500,000 of prize money is at stake.
Everything talked about during the event marks the starting point of the plans between the four companies, who have been in talks since 2015.
It really is a first in a series of innovative and community- oriented programs driving the growth and development of the country’s esports and gaming culture. Fans and media partners alike can expect additional initiatives, including original content, industry events and other unique experiences throughout 2018.
