Hold on to your seats, guys, this is gonna be a long post! I just came from the most recent Wonderful World with Globe press conference and boy, have they got a LOT of exciting news for us!
This is the tenth of the Wonderful World with Globe series! Every quarter they come out with an event like this to make gigantic announcements that will definitely wow their customers. This time, we tackle how the telco is set to change the entertainment landscape in the Philippines by coming out with new content partners and innovative entertainment ideas! So, let’s get started!
New Content Partners in Smule, Turner, Sports Illustrated, Astro, Disney, & Netflix!
Globe announced the new content partners (to add to their already existing roster of Spotify, HOOQ, and NBA) that are set to bring more entertainment to their customers’ fingertips.
The telco announced that they’ve partnered up with Cartoon Network, the Turner-owned brand. So you can now watch Cartoon Network Watch and Cartoon Network anything on your mobile or broadband gadgets! So, more Adventure Time and We Bare Bears for me, haha!
The Sing! by Smule partnership was also announced. I think given Filipinos’ love for karaoke, it was only a matter of time before this app made its way to the country. This app is known for allowing users to record a “video duet” with their favorite artists. This was super popular online for a while with Jessie J and her song, “Flashlight”. 🙂
Of course, we can’t forget that Globe has a distinct partnership with Disney! This time they’re bringing in Disney Channel Apps such as the Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney Junior to their customers!
This is great news for parents and Disney babies like me who can catch more than 100 video-on-demand full episodes and live streaming of the Disney Channels. Whee!
The second to the biggest news for me that night was the announcement that Globe is the first mobile and broadband Philippine partner of extremely-popular video streaming service, Netflix.
You could literally hear all the people in the cinema go, “whoo!” when this was announced, LOL. Crossing my fingers that the internet at home can handle this much streaming when I do decide to get on Netflix, LOL.
But the biggest thing for me was when they released the news that they’ve partnered with Malaysian media powerhouse Astro to give customers access to eGG Network or Every Good Game.
The Philippines is turning out to be a giant hub for e-Sports and gaming, so getting access to watch international tournaments for LoL, Dota 2, CS:GO, and Hearthstone, is something very interesting to me! I’m looking forward to seeing this more than anything else!
Okay, ehem, now we move on to the big stuff. HAHA!
Introducing Globe Studios & Globe Live
Globe Telecom has recognized that the landscape of entertainment in the Philippines is constantly evolving and changing. Most of the media that we consume can be found and shared through social media on our mobile phones. This lead them to create their own original video productions through Globe Studios.
Calling it the next generation of entertainment to mobile, Globe Studios will create new content with top film directors such as Erik Matti, Paul Soriano, Quark Henares, Dan Villegas, Sigrid Bernardo, Joyce Bernal, and Lav Diaz. This venture is being backed by both local and Asian media houses such as Viva Films, Reality Entertainment, Quantum Films, Spring Films and Astro of Malaysia.
“Consumption of mobile entertainment has grown exponentially over the past years. Today, customers no longer wait for their favorite shows on their TV screens. Instead, they dictate what they want to watch when and where they want to. With Globe Studios, we will now produce our own clips, series and even movies. Backed up with the biggest director partners and entertainment companies in the industry, we are set to show what customers want today,” said Albert de Larrazabal, Globe Chief Commercial Officer.
The other big thing that Globe is doing is creating personalized content. Faced with the challenge of how to deliver the most engaging and creative events that will satisfy customers, Globe Live is set to revolutionize the live events industry by elevating production quality and at the same time, tapping the wide distribution coverage of Globe to promote and assemble events that are of international size and quality.
This can be seen in their first foray into theater with the staging and production of Green Day’s American Idiot, a Philippine production of the hit Broadway musical.
Produced together with 9 Works Theatrical, American Idiot will be held at the new Globe Iconic Store in Bonifacio High Street Amphitheater in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig which features two massive Times Square-like LED walls in a unique outdoor setup to accommodate thousands of people. American Idiot is composed of a star-studded talent roster headlined by Basti Artadi of Wolfgang, Miggy Chavez of Chicosci, former Rivermaya vocalists Jason Fernandez and Norby David, and veteran thespian Nel Gomez. The show is set to run from June 24 until July 10, 2016.
Whew. That was a mouthful! All in all, I think it’s great that Globe is venturing out into new things and trying to elevate the type of media and content that us Filipinos consume. I just really hope that the internet can keep up. AND we all know that THAT is a problem only the government can fix. LOL.
