I don’t think that I’ve said it enough but I am a really huge fan of Sailor Moon. The relaunched anime, Sailor Moon Crystal, stays true to the manga storyline, making me love it all the more. And with the announcement that a new season for the Third Arc is coming out soon, I think it’s only appropriate that I show you a bit more on why I’m hooked on the series.
So, here are a few of my favorite moments from the First Arc of Sailor Moon Crystal!
*For those who haven’t seen the anime yet or haven’t caught up to snuff, please don’t click the link below as it may contain some spoilers!
1. The Past
I cannot explain the feels that I have every single time there is an allusion to Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Kamen’s past as Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion. Everybody loves a good old drama of star-crossed lovers. And their love story was exactly just that. There is something so nostalgic when they opened the series with dreams of the past and then they continued to show flashes of it in the following episodes.
And everything was just so magical, just as magical as Sailor Moon is, and will ever be. 🙂
2. Transformation
The first time Usagi transformed into Sailor Moon in Sailor Moon Crystal is ground-breaking. It was probably the most anticipated part of the series, given that it is an iconic feature of the 90’s anime. And although a lot of people found it weird or disliked it, I, personally, totally loved it.
Sure, the mix of 3D into a 2D anime may be slightly different but I consider it a unique part of the new anime series. It’s a new age and we have new technology that encourages different kinds of creativity. 🙂
I can say the same for each of the Sailor Senshi! And I always get very giddy whenever one of them transforms! It’s just really so pretty, huhu!
3. The Awakening of the Princess (and the Legendary Silver Crystal)
The moment Sailor Moon awakens as Princess Serenity is the turning point of the anime (and the manga). From then on, enemies become focused on one of three things: the Legendary Silver Crystal, Sailor Moon, or Tuxedo Kamen. Either there is an evil entity wanting the power of the crystal to themselves or someone who had been in love/ is in love with Sailor Moon or Tuxedo Kamen and would stop at nothing to take them, even if that meant being corrupted by an evil entity. … You get the drift? LOL.
But how Princess Serenity was awakened, how the Legendary Silver Crystal was activated, was because of Sailor Moon’s strong and pure heart that is only determined to save the people she holds near and dear to her. Usagi may be a crybaby, immature, and selfish sometimes, but her heart is solid gold. 🙂
On a very shallow perspective, I’ve always loved the idea of being a princess so when I found out that Usagi was Princess Serenity, I was definitely all for it!
Not much is discussed in the anime about the Shitennou or the Four Heavenly Kings. All we know is that they were Prince Endymion’s faithful generals during the Silver Millenium and have been reincarnated in the current Earth but were brainwashed by Queen Beryl.
The manga does not blatantly talk about the love affairs between the Inner Senshi and the Four Kings. It only tells the story of how Venus met Kunzite and alludes to the fact that maybe, there is something more between them. What I like about Sailor Moon Crystal is how they added a couple of scenes that cemented the idea. Takeuchi Naoko had been thinking about the past lives of the Shitennou but unfortunately, only Venus and Kunzite’s & Mars & Jadeite’s relationships have canonical support. D:
Other than that, the Shitennou play a big role as Tuxedo Kamen’s support group. Kinda creepy, but hey, we can’t complain. 🙂
5. Every Usagi x Mamoru Moment Ever!
My fixation with Sailor Moon is based on the love between two people that transcends time and space. For all those who have read the manga until the very end, this is something that you’ll notice. It’s very hard to miss. Anyway, in the past, the present, the future, and the far far future, the love between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen bounces back time and time again.
Seeing Sailor Moon Crystal tell of these tender moments (okay, some maybe not so tender, LOL) in the manga will always bring a ginormous smile to my face and fluttery, giddy, happy feelings in my heart. 🙂
