OMGluie Movie Review: The Greatest Showman

It’s been a while since I’ve written a movie review and far longer since I’ve seen a movie musical (I’ve rewatched RENT, Chicago, and Hairspray one too many times, really, LOL) so here’s an OMGluie Movie Review featuring The Greatest Showman! 🙂

Let’s just start off with me saying that I thoroughly and utterly enjoyed this movie. Haha!

The Greatest Showman (2017) stars big names in the movie and music industry such as Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Keala Settle, and is directed by Michael Gracey.

The story revolves around P.T. Barnum (played by Hugh Jackman) and his journey to produce the greatest show on his side of the planet. A.K.A. the birth of the circus as we know it today.

First off, what’s not to love about this movie? It’s a musical!! AND it has Hugh Jackman in it singing a bunch of songs and dancing a bunch of immortal Broadway routines, haha!

But what I loved the most is how the vintage and “old” movie setting was brilliantly combined with modern character songs that we can all relate to. It makes you realize that no matter the age or decade, we all still face the same woes in love, betrayal, acceptance, and courage.

To be honest, I feel like the plot of the movie wasn’t meant to be too deep. Issues about racism, class differences, and acceptance for uniqueness were definitely tackled but you will still leave the cinemas with a lighthearted feeling. True, the conflicts were there in the plot but none were too complex to leave you quite hopeless.

The only thing I thought was lacking is power in the songs. Maybe because it was recorded on film but the songs felt muted. Can you imagine listening to the same songs but in a theater and sung LIVE? I think that experience would be quite different!

Bottom line is, everything about this movie is enjoyable. I didn’t want it to end. I wanted Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron to keep dancing in that bar.

I wanted The Bearded Lady to keep on belting her heart out during “This Is Me”. AND, cheesy as it might sound, I didn’t ever want Zac Efron and Zendaya to stop flying around in those ropes, LOL.

If you’re a fan of musicals, this is for you. If you’re a fan of any of the stars featured in the film, this is for you, too. 🙂
