During Tokyo Game Show 2026, we got an exclusive hands-off preview of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s third expansion, Songs of the Past.
It’s quite exciting because it’s Geralt’s first brand-new adventure in over a decade! We couldn’t take photos or videos during the preview, but the build played live by the developers was making me think about booting up the game that’s been in my Steam backlog since forever. XD
Songs of the Past Takes Us to Letten, Dandelion’s Homeland
Songs of the Past is the third expansion for The Witcher 3, following Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. CD PROJEKT RED is co-developing it with Fool’s Theory, a studio made up of veterans who worked on the original game. They’re calling it the “final chapter of The Witcher 3.”
We got to see the new region of Letten, the rural homeland of Dandelion (Jaskier). Dandelion got a full name reveal, too, apparently it’s Julian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove!
Described as the Land of Plenty, Letten is untouched by the wars elsewhere on the Continent, with bountiful harvests, folklore, and festivals.
We find Geralt waking up from a disturbing dream about Dandelion, and he makes his way to his friend’s family mansion to figure out if something went wrong.
We’re introduced to Lilla, Dandelion’s cousin, who is convinced that the bard had gone missing, pushing his abandoned lute as evidence. Lilla convinces Geralt to help in looking for him, leading them both to both to the Garden of Thorns.
We see the end of the preview in that location, with Geralt encountering new enemies and bosses while trying to discover the mystery behind Dandelion’s appearance.
A New Chain Weapon, Enemy Type, and Friendlier Skill Tree
During the preview, we’re introduced to Geralt’s new toy – the chain. It can be used to pull enemies in, land whipping attacks at range, and target specific weak points.
A new mob enemy, the Swarmion, was also showcased. It’s a new monster that wraps a swarm of hornets around itself as armor. Dont’ worry, because the chain can break through that.
The team also shared that the skill tree got a rework. This is part of the Remastered upgrade, with the new layout being noticeably friendlier than what the original game shipped with. Combat also gets a revised camera and targeting behavior, plus more accessibility options.
Similar Things to Expect from the Remastered
According to the devs, the preview that they showcased already ran on the tech behind The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered. The visuals are pretty breathtaking, with Letten bathed in beautiful sunlight and the Garden of Thorns giving off dark, foreboding vibes.
Letten is built as a fully realized open world in its own right, comparable in scale to Toussaint from Blood and Wine. NPCs have more complex daily routines and more detailed dialogue, so the region is meant to feel alive beyond the quest markers.
The preview closed with a boss fight and slow-motion executions, so it was interesting to see it culminate in such a manner. 🙂
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past TGS 2026 Hands-Off Preview – Final Thoughts
I mean, I clearly said that seeing 45 minutes of Songs of the Past gameplay kinda makes me want to boot up the game, after being in my Steam library for so long. LOL.
The game looks incredibly beautiful already, and the premise is interesting as well. But, I would think you’d have to play the base game and its expansions so you can fully understand the characters and references in this DLC.
So, yes, I am 100% interested to play this game, and I’m glad they’re coming out with the free Remastered upgrade. It arrives this September 29, 2026!
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past DLC is a paid expansion that’s coming to most platforms this 2027. It’s available for wish listing, and should probably be a Day One purchase for long-time Geralt and Witcher fans. 🙂
